How to Clean and Disinfect a Dog Poop Scooper

A scooper keeps waste off your hands, but the tool itself needs occasional attention to stay genuinely sanitary. The good news: with the right design and a simple routine, this takes a couple of minutes.

First, know your scooper type

How much cleaning your scooper needs depends on whether waste touches the tool at all. Traditional open jaw-and-rake scoopers make direct contact with waste on every use, so they need cleaning after every session. Bag-lined designs like the CleanScooper close their claw around a bag from the built-in dispenser, so the waste goes into the bag, not onto the tool. That reduces routine cleaning to a quick check, with a deeper clean only if a bag ever tears.

The routine clean (after use, for direct-contact scoopers)

Rinse with a hose to remove residue, focusing on joints and crevices where matter collects. Wash with dish soap and a dedicated brush; keep that brush for this purpose only and store it outside. Rinse again and let the tool dry fully in the sun, since sunlight and dryness are unfriendly to most microbes.

The disinfecting step (weekly, or after any direct contact)

Cleaning removes waste; disinfecting kills what is left. After washing, apply a diluted household bleach solution or a standard disinfectant spray to the contact surfaces, let it sit wet for several minutes, then rinse thoroughly and dry. Disinfectants only work on surfaces that have already been cleaned, so never skip the soap step.

Storage matters too

Store the scooper somewhere dry, off the ground, and away from kids' toys and gardening tools. A wet scooper in a dark shed corner is a microbe habitat; a dry one hanging on a hook is not.

Wash your hands anyway

Per CDC guidance for pet waste handling, finish with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, even after using a tool. For why the tool-based approach beats the bag-over-hand method in the first place, see scooper vs. poop bags and should you wash your hands after picking up dog poop.
